The demand for digital transformation in Cambodia has been precipitously rising with a simultaneous need to reduce unnecessary upfront costs. SME Bank was looking for a tech vendor who could help their team plan the infrastructure for a banking API gateway on the cloud, specifically AWS.

In the second half of 2022, some staff from both Slash and SME Bank of Cambodia had a chance to meet at an AWS event. From there, a friendly discussion began regarding AWS and SME Bank’s upcoming needs.

After aligning on the project goals, expectations, and ways of working, the Slash and SME Bank teams got underway. They hit some early home runs with some proof of concepts to test some of their assumptions for various important criteria. That covered things such as the availability & latency of the APIs deployed off-premise, the scalability of the servers, and the initial finding on the Web security such as the web application firewall (WAF).

Confidence was high, and the team forged forward, poised for a big win.

Just as the team began to run, they felt the ground beneath them begin to give way. They noticed their own knowledge and ability gap when attempting to build the infrastructure foundation for their envisioned architecture that spanned across multiple environments with secure and private connectivity to their core system on-premise, as well as having the scalability and availability that AWS offers through disaster recovery strategy.

Their deadline was looming and they needed to reach completion for their next milestone of implementing other core app functionalities. The goal was to control operational and upfront costs, and time to implement on the cloud, yet they also needed to comply with local regulations for proper server hosting and data that are sensitive while avoiding that sensitive information leaking.

It was clear the SME Bank team need an ace in the hole, a tech partner to help pull them out of the quandary they now found themselves in.

The cloud journey was going to be the ticket out so partnering with an experienced AWS team was necessary.

This brings us back to the chance meeting at the AWS event between SME Bank and Slash. The engagement began with the Slash team first scoping out what SME Bank needed, then turning that into a clear strategy to reach their targeted architecture.

Following this first step, the teams aligned on the implementation expectations and began the phase 2: implement their AWS cloud infrastructure for 4 environments with disaster recovery defined, and the secure private connection to their on premise APIs to allow them to securely expose their APIs to their partners.

Finally with the support and guidance from the Slash team, SME Bank was able to complete the project and satisfy the requirements. This allowed them to focus on other business values by starting the new mobile/internet banking projects, and focusing on delivering those values for their stakeholders and the customers.
